How to Handle Asbestos

asbestos removal

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a term that refers to a group of six naturally occurring minerals. These minerals are composed of flexible, soft fibres, which are heat resistant. Asbestos is an extremely efficient insulator, and as a result it was used for decades as a building material.

Asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1999, however, buildings constructed before this are likely to still contain asbestos in some form.

If the building materials containing asbestos are intact, they pose very little risk. However, if these materials are disturbed or damaged in some way, asbestos fibres can be released into the air.

When asbestos fibres are inhaled into the lungs, they can lead to serious lung conditions, including lung scarring, and even forms of cancer. The symptoms of illnesses caused by asbestos can take decades to appear, so a resulting illness may not present itself for decades after asbestos exposure.

What to do if you discover asbestos

If you suspect that asbestos might be present during any renovation or refurbishment work, it’s important to halt your work immediately, until you can confirm whether asbestos is present or not.

Ensure that the suspect area is properly signposted, and that a proper distance is kept from this area by you and any other workers.

If the presence of asbestos is confirmed, the affected materials need to be left undisturbed and sealed. When this is not possible, a professional must be consulted to remove the asbestos properly, you should not attempt to remove asbestos by yourself.
